About me...
My name is Drew Snyder, and I am currently in my 12th year of teaching at West Prairie Middle School. I teach 7th and 8th grade social studies, specifically focusing in United States history. I obtained my bachelor's degree in Social Science Education from Olivet Nazarene University in 2009; I also completed my master's degree from Olivet in Curriculum and Instruction in the spring of 2016.
Class Topics
The class being taught covers a wide range of history, dating all the way back to European explorers through modern day. Seventh grade history specifically focuses on the Age of Exploration and British colonization through the American Civil War. Eighth grade history begins with Civil War Reconstruction, and goes through the Cold War.
In addition to discussing historical events, we also focus on contemporary issues. Every other week, students complete a current events assignment. They are required to find a recent news story, fill out a graphic organizer with main ideas of the article, and then write a summary of what they have learned. Often times, we'll watch CNN Student News (link below) and share the stories we've found. Students seem to thoroughly enjoy this activity, and we are able to discuss current affairs and connect them to past history.
**Note: The graphic organizer that students can use for this assignment is available to download below.***
Students also do not have a traditional textbook for this class. We are using a U.S. History book through my website. See the tabs above to review the book.
